Color Theory for Practical Use

Color is appreciated by everyone. Don’t most people have a favorite color? The colors we choose to surround ourselves with can reflect our various personalities and affect our moods. We make important choices when selecting colors for our living spaces and for personal adornment, such as what we wear. Color theory is used by artists and designers but it can also be applied to every day use for any kind of decorating that we choose to do. The variety of colors we choose can affect each other when combined and in their relationships to one another.

Lets start at the beginning. Every color in the universe is made up of three primary
colors; red, yellow and blue. Difficult to believe, isn’t it? This was learned long ago
in the seventeenth century by Sir Isaac Newton who analyzed a ray of sunlight
projected through a glass prism. The dispersed ray of light separates into a
spectrum of color looking very much like a rainbow. You might wonder about black
and white. Actually, they are not colors at all, white is the presence of all color and
black is the absence of all color. All colors displayed through the prism at once
displays as white, the absence of light is black. From these color theory
observations, we not only learn about the three primaries; but also that there are
three secondary colors; orange, green and violet. The secondary colors are made by
adding two equal parts of the primary colors, such as when mixed, red and yellow
make orange. You may have learned this as a child in art class in school. These six
colors, primaries and secondaries, make up the basic color wheel.

The next set of colors we call the tertiaries. The six tertiary colors are made up of
equal parts of one primary and one secondary color. For instance, blue (primary)
plus green (secondary) makes a blue-green. All twelve colors; the three
complimentary colors, three secondary colors and six tertiary colors create the
complete color wheel. Try making your own color wheel by starting with red at the
top and moving around a circle clockwise; red-orange, orange, yellow-orange,
yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet, violet, red-violet and
back to red.

There are a many other color properties to learn but here are a few of them. A color
by itself is a pure hue. The addition of white to a color changes that color to a “tint”.
Adding black changes the color to a “shade”. A “tone” is created if both black and
white are added, this makes a grayer version of the color. the relative warmth or
coolness of colors Another property of color is called temperature, colors can be
warm or cool. Warm colors have red, orange or yellow present and cool colors
contain green, blue and violet. However, it is also possible to have a warm blue or a
cool red. If a little of a warm color is mixed with a blue, it will become warmer. The
same principles apply if a bit of a cool color is added to red. Color temperatures are
formed by variations in the pigment. Color temperature can create a mood and also
depth. Warm colors come forward and cool colors recede.

Putting colors together and using them in different color schemes can be exciting
but sometimes difficult to know where to begin. There are different types of color
schemes that can be created using color, and here are a few to try. One type, the
easiest to begin with, would be a monochromatic color scheme. This means using
variations of one color only. This color can be modified by adding black and/or
white to create tints, shades and tones and vary the intensity of the color itself. This
type of color scheme is rather subtle with little color contrast.

Another type of color scheme would be the analogous color scheme in which you
would use three colors that are adjacent to one another on the color wheel, or
neighbors. An example would be, green, blue-green and blue. This type of color
scheme works well because the neighboring colors create a color harmony. When
used in a design, one color is dominant while the others are used to enhance the
color. Again, the intensity of each color can be varied with black and white.

The strongest of color schemes would be the complimentary color schemes.
Complimentary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. For
instance, red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet are all
complimentaries. When complimentary colors are placed next to each other, they
create energy and movement. Two complimentaries create a strong contrast,
intensify one another and attract attention. Often its best to use a warm color with a
cool complimentary but keep in mind that the warm color will come forward while
the cool color recedes. Use the two complimentary colors carefully, as too much of a
good thing can be overpowering!

Balance your designs and color schemes, whether you're using paint, fabric, yarn or
decorating a room. By repeating color in a design, emphasis is given to the effect
produced by each color and will carry the viewer's eye from one part to the next.
This movement or flow around the pattern is called the rhythm of color. Contrast is
important too; use lights (tints) and darks (shades) to add impact to your design.
Also balance by keeping colors somewhat uncomplicated. Too many colors and too
much detail will distract from the overall design.

Each person uses color differently to express themselves. Experiment with color and
let your own intuition lead you to your own unique color expression.

It is difficult to classify a particular graphic design in the category of good design or bad design, as there are multiple factors on which the success of a graphic design rests. Graphic designs are a perfect blend of both the world of art and design. Whereas art concerns personal interpretation of the things and thus is subjective, graphic designs serve a particular function. Graphic designing is very essential in the entertainment industry as it a powerful storytelling device. A single design can do all the talking for the product. It relates to selling or promoting a product, services or a brand name. Even films, TV shows and other features can be promoted using graphic designs. If you want to have a unique and competent graphic design you need to keep following things in consideration:
• Have clear ideas: for a good graphic design, you need to have a clear vision. This would help you communicate your ideas well with the designer so that he/she can work accordingly and help you realize your dream graphic design.
• Choose a good graphic designer: half of the battle is won, if you choose a good graphic designer. The graphic designer must be well equipped with all the latest graphic designing software and techniques. Also, the graphic designer must be well-versed with finishing tools so as to deliver the client completely finished product which includes page layout, chromatics and typography.
• Designer must have a professional approach: a good graphic designer is always a good listener. It is their responsibility to lend a patient ear to the client so that to grasp what the client actually needs. • Relate to target audience: the graphic designer must consider himself/herself as a member of targeted audience so as to check whether the design captures or grabs or motivates the audience. Also, check the visibility and clarity of the text for the success of the design.
• Clear pictures and images: a good graphic design needs to have images which are clear as crystal and not pixilated. There should be no unintentional blurring of edging. Photographs chosen should be clear and unique and in tandem with the message of the product. The presentation ought to be professional in approach to give authenticity to the graphic designs. The colors in the photograph need to be in tandem with the background and rest of the project's image. Though a contrasting hue may be used to lend it prominence.
• Color theme: a vital part of designing is colors. But it becomes all the more important in graphic designing as product and logo designs are always in vanguard in the competitive industries. Colors in designs express emotions and feelings strongly and even help companies communicate with little efforts. Colors alone and in combination inspire intensely.

Graphic design is a complex profession that requires intelligence, knowledge, talent and skill in a wide range of work domains. Graphic designers are, first of all, designers who work with images, words and media. They utilize advanced technology to create visual and multimedia presentations. They interact with other professionals, clients, customers and managers. They market and sell products, including their own talent. Graphic designers need skills in cognition, technology, art, business and interpersonal relations in order to succeed.

Cognitive Skills

Graphic designers must develop specific cognitive skills. Cognition has to do with the ways in which we think and acquire knowledge. Graphic designers have creative, yet well-organized minds. They are artistic and logical. They utilize both the left (logical, organized, linear) side and the right (creative, global, intuitive) side of the brain.

As artists, graphic designers are highly creative, original, intuitive and perceptive. They are able to think visually; to envision a project from beginning to end. At the same time, they must be able to solve complex problems, make judgments and decisions, and think logically and critically.

Time management and organizational skills are also important, as graphic designers work on multiple projects simultaneously, have strict deadlines to meet and must work within budgetary constraints.

Technology

In the past couple of decades, graphic design has become a highly technical profession. Layouts that were sketched out in the past are now designed on a computer. In today's world, it is impossible to compete as a graphic designer without expertise in state-of-the-art computerized graphic design software and the ability to learn quickly and adapt as the technology becomes more sophisticated.

Graphic designers must also be multimedia experts, skilled in utilizing audiovisual technologies, animation, digital photography and other multimedia techniques. Again, the technology continues to evolve rapidly, and the graphic artist must be able to learn, adapt and adopt new techniques as they become available.

Art

Graphic designers are artists. They have a solid understanding of color, line, composition and design. They create graphs, charts, images and symbols and use them, along with other audiovisual components, to create a coherent message. They take an idea, a concept, and communicate that idea in a way that informs and/or entertains visually.

In order to do this, graphic designers create art.. The particular project may be a brochure, an ad or a presentation, but the project will be a work of art.

Business

Graphic designers need a foundational understanding of business practices. Much of their work is done to help businesses improve their profit margins and all graphic designers work within budgetary and time constraints. They need to understand budgets and profit-loss concepts. They utilize branding concepts to create a visual identity for a client or product. Sales and marketing rely heavily on graphic design to influence customers to buy the products advertised.

Many graphic designers have their own businesses, and rely on their understanding of business to help them succeed. Graphic designers in every setting and situation will find themselves packaging, presenting, marketing and selling their own ideas and products to clients.

Interpersonal Relations

Graphic designers work extensively with people and must have good interpersonal skills. They must be able to work with fellow designers, other professionals, vendors, managers and clients. They need to be able to delegate and manage technicians and assistants and work as part of a team.

Graphic designers must have excellent customer relations' skills. They work extensively with clients, listening carefully to a client's needs and interpreting those needs into a design project. They often present their ideas and discover that the client had something else in mind, so they redesign until the customer is satisfied. A graphic designer cannot be so in love with his design that he or she fails to meet the customer's needs and expectations.

Most importantly, graphic designers must have outstanding communications skills. They must be able to communicate visually, verbally and in writing. The mechanics of oral and written communication, grammar, punctuation and spelling, are as important as color, line and composition. Part of communication is listening, and the graphic designer must be a skilled listener in order to understand what a client is trying to communicate.

Today's graphic designers are highly skilled technicians, talented artists, outstanding communicators and knowledgeable, intelligent, business-savvy professionals. Knowledge and skills can be learned; intelligence and talent can be developed. Individuals who choose a career in graphic design will use all of their talents and abilities, all of their brains, all of their creativity and intelligence to translate thoughts and ideas into visual communication that informs, entertains and sells.
